A woman who was told she would never have children is now a mother of 10. The woman, from the UK, had been left infertile after a car accident but found out she could become pregnant through IVF treatment.

Alicia Dougherty, 40, and Joshua Dougherty, 42, from New York, sought for a baby for nine years but had 11 miscarriages owing to Alicia’s stage four endometriosis.
Alicia was heartbroken when she learned she wouldn’t be able to have a child, but she went on to surprise everyone by giving birth to four children and adopting another six.
She now has 10 children.
In 2010, the couple adopted Alex, who is now 15 years old, and the family continued to expand.
Alicia went to South Dakota to pick up Alex, a four-year-old boy, and return him to his family.
‘It was unbelievable, we left New York without any kids and returned home with a son,’ Alicia recalled.
‘Having our kid finally in the home was incredible.
‘He rushed into the room, excitedly shouting “mum and dad” – he was overjoyed to see us.
‘Having him among us felt great, but it was a steep learning curve.’ We had no idea where to begin since we had never had children before.’
Alicia discovered out she was pregnant only six days after Alex moved home with his parents.
‘Joshua and I were stunned for hours, pinching ourselves but it was unbelievable,’ she added.

She carried the baby to term and gave birth to Zoey, who is now nine years old, in 2012.
Still yearning for a larger family, the couple adopted James, who is now 14 years old, a year later.
They were happy with their family and believed their prospects of conceiving naturally were slim – until Alicia became pregnant again and gave birth to Dash, who is now seven years old.
The progesterone the mother was taking had an unintended effect of increasing her fertility.
Jordan and Jason, twins, joined the large family a year later in 2015 – first as foster children.
Alicia, who is the same age as Dash, claims she raised the three as triplets.
‘Five days turned into seven, and then we formally adopted them after three years,’ she said.
‘Once they came to stay, we couldn’t bear the thought of letting them go.’
‘They warmed my heart, and there was something about them being Dash’s age that made it feel natural.’

Now that she was fertile, the previously unthinkable became routine for Alicia: she became pregnant again and gave birth to Bodhi, who is now two years old.
She adopted Patrick, 12, and Bree, 10, and gave birth to Harle, 2, after becoming used to her “crazy home” and large family.
The mother of ten children claims she spends her time ‘catering for an army’ and owns a 15-seater people transporter.
‘I live in a very chaotic home, but I’m so accustomed to it now that I wouldn’t have it any other way,’ Alicia said.
‘After years of believing that I would never have a child, I now enjoy sharing my heart with as many children as possible.
‘Even though we are now a family of 12, I am certain that we will adopt more.’

‘It was really a terrible time for both of us,’ she remarked of her infertility.
‘After I got married, all I wanted to do was have a family and realize a goal I’d had for a long time.
‘I began to sink into a deep, black pit. It was a really lonely kind of sorrow, and one that many people don’t comprehend until they’ve gone through it.’
Her urge to adopt became stronger after learning that there are over 100,000 children in foster care.
‘It felt like the ideal thing to do, to adopt a kid who needed a home, and it would give us the family we had always imagined,’ Alicia said.

The mother has now chosen to devote her life to child adoption.
‘It’s very busy and needs a lot of regularity,’ Alicia remarked.
‘Every day, I wake up at 5 a.m. to get their lunches ready and to mentally prepare myself for a long day.’
‘I’ve been cooking for an army for so long that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to prepare a regular meal.
‘On a Friday night, we have stacks of boxes of pizza, a big dish of spaghetti on Monday, and tacos on Tuesday – I have the dinner pattern down down.
‘To think I thought I’d never have a kid for nine years and now I have ten – it’s amazing, and I certainly want more.’
