The trade between Luka Doncic and Trae Young, who at the time were considered the two most promising players in their respective draft classes, has since gone down as one of the most controversial trades in recent NBA history. 3 1/2 years later, here’s a look back at how these two prospects did after being traded for each other.
The “trae young and luka doncic trade” is a question that has been asked since the trade happened. Who won?
Luka Doncic and Trae Young are two of the best players in the NBA right now. But, because to a trade in the 2018 NBA Draft, the two teenage phenoms will be inextricably intertwined.
The third overall selection went to the Atlanta Hawks, who had just finished with a 24-58 record. The Dallas Mavericks, who were selected two choices later, had the identical record. Atlanta would go on to choose Doncic, a young Slovenian who many regarded as the best talent in the draft. However, the guard’s time with the Hawks was short-lived, as he was traded to Dallas in exchange for Oklahoma guard Trae Young and a 2019 protected first-round selection.
Both Doncic and Young are in the middle of their fourth professional season, which began three and a half years ago. While each has made enough of an impression to be called a star, it’s worth considering who club came out on top in the remarkable trade.
Luka Doncic has a long history of success with the Dallas Mavericks.

Dirk Nowitzki was the Mavericks’ face for many years. However, Doncic, who is 22 years old, has easily stepped into the position once held by the future Hall of Famer.
From the moment he stepped onto the court in 2018, Doncic has been one of the top players in the league. The former EuroLeague MVP averaged 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in his Rookie of the Year season. In 2019-20, those stats increased dramatically across the board, with the first-time All-Star finishing the season with 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists.
Luka, a model stat sheet filler, has 38 triple-doubles in less than four complete seasons, which ranks him 11th all-time. At 19 years and 327 days old, he became the third-youngest player in league history to register a triple-double. He’s also been a model of consistency, shattering Michael Jordan’s post-NBA-ABA merger record of 18 consecutive games with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Luka has already earned two All-Star selections and first-team All-NBA honors at the age of 22. He’s the only player since Tim Duncan to get two first-team All-NBA choices in his first three seasons after the merger. And, at the pace he’s going, he’ll be selected for many more All-NBA teams in the near future.
While Doncic’s individual stats are great, the Mavs have yet to reach the playoffs. In each of Luka’s playoff appearances, the Dallas Mavericks have been eliminated in the first round. In addition, the star guard has been entangled in a dispute regarding his working relationship with former Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle and some front-office personnel.
The Atlanta Hawks have been resurrected thanks to Trae Young.

Young was perhaps the most intriguing player in college basketball while Doncic thrived over the water in Europe. When the 6-foot-1 guard departed Norman for the ATL, the excitement only grew.
Young received unanimous All-Rookie accolades despite not winning Rookie of the Year after averaging 19.1 points and 8.1 assists. In his first and only All-Star season, he averaged a career-high 29.6 points and 9.3 assists per game. Young is one of just six players in NBA history to have two or more 40-point, 15-assist games.
Young’s honors pale in comparison to Doncic’s, with just one All-Star participation and no All-NBA choices. Trae’s main point, though, is predicated on Atlanta’s performance last season. The Hawks, who were seeded fifth in the Eastern Conference, beat the New York Knicks in the first round before shocking the top-seeded Philadelphia 76ers in the second. Young, of course, was at the heart of the miraculous run.
First, in Atlanta’s five-game pounding of New York, Young had numerous 30-point performances, including a game-winning floater. Ice Trae recorded five double-doubles in the seven-game series against the Sixers, including a 39-point performance in Game 5 to cap a 26-point comeback win. Young then helped the Hawks win Game 1 against the eventual NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks with a 48-point, 11-assist performance. Atlanta, on the other hand, lost in six games to the Bucks, owing in large part to a bone injury in Young’s foot, which forced him to miss Games 4 and 5.
Who came out on top in the Luka Doncic-Trae Young trade?
*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden} html,bodyheight:100% img,spanposition:absolute;width:100% ;top:0;bottom:0;margin:auto;bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyhe spanheight:1.5em;text-align:center;font:48px/1.5 sans-serif;color:white;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow
Every player involved in the transfer must be considered in order to fully analyze the whole transaction. For Atlanta, that means include Cam Reddish, the Duke star who was selected with Dallas’ 2019 first-round choice. Reddish has averaged 10.8 points in three seasons, including his injury-shortened sophomore season last year. In his first 25 games, the 22-year-old has found a home as the Hawks’ sixth man, shooting a career-high 40.6 percent from the floor and 37.7 percent from three.
So, who comes out on top in a transaction involving the 2018 Draft’s only two All-Stars? Is it the Mavericks, who have yet to win a playoff game despite acquiring a generational talent in Doncic? Is it the Hawks, who can claim a recent trip to the Eastern Conference Finals thanks to Young and Reddish? Perhaps the solution is simply both.
Even if they don’t win the playoffs, Dallas will never regret signing Doncic. Not when the 6-foot-7 guard has been connected to LeBron James for the bulk of his career. Atlanta would never contemplate “settling” for Young, who has drawn parallels to Stephen Curry because of his agility, handling, and range.
If forced to choose a winner, Luka and the Mavericks have a small advantage due to their skill and honors. But it could all change in an instant if Trae and the Hawks go on another long playoff run and win some silverware.
Meanwhile, we may fantasize about the two superstars facing off in an NBA Finals battle. That would undoubtedly aid in the determination of a clear winner.
