The Presidential election is just weeks away and the debates are starting to heat up. But, there’s something we can all agree on: Americans love their sportsball. And as the country gears up for football season, maybe it’s time that you give your favorite NFL team a vote of confidence? You know what they say about opinions – everybody has one.
In the words of one famous politician, “If voting changed anything, they’d make it illegal.” But if you’re still confused on whether or not your vote counts and that it will change something, then this article is for you.

Lee Pitts is a columnist for The and Paso Robles Press who can be reached at After last year’s election, I’ve lost faith in the system. When a network reporter declared, “With 150 percent of the vote tallied, we can now predict a winner,” I became dubious.
I believe we need a more open and honest voting system, and rather than duplicating Venezuela’s election process, I believe we should adopt the approach used in the lovely northern California town of Burney. This town is known for its fishing, as well as the fact that one of its residents once appeared on The Price Is Right, and a scene from the movie “Stand By Me” was shot there. I keep up with local news since the Northern California Traveler published my column for decades, and when they stopped, The Intermountain News took over. I’ve also visited the location several times, and the sky were always clear, the air was crisp, the water was clear, and the fish were plentiful. It has always appealed to me as a terrific location to live. Unfortunately for me, the only positions listed in the ads appeared to be for “strip and chain pullers,” which I have no clue what they are or how to perform.
Years ago, I preserved a newspaper item about Burney’s honorary mayor election, and I thought it was interesting enough to keep for many years. You may vote as many times and as frequently as you like in Burney’s honorary mayoral election. The catch is that each vote is a buck. Simply said, the election is more akin to an auction, with the winning bidder receiving the greatest money. If we’re being honest, it’s fairly similar to how we conduct elections today, but Burney eliminates the middlemen… lobbyists.
The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the election, and all proceeds will go to charity. The winner gets to donate half of their winnings to their choice charity, such as Boy Scout Troop #38, the local 4-H club, Make A Wish, a campaign to “Bring Back the Swings” to the park, or a painting on a local building. Second place receives 40% of their earnings donated to their cause, third place gets 30%, fourth place gets 20%, and the remaining candidates get 10%. The remaining funds will be used to develop the community by the Chamber of Commerce.

Candidates set up polling stations anywhere they wish and collect ballots, which are collected in the form of cash in this scenario. Take a look at how much more open Burney’s elections are. Locals may meet and greet the candidates during a candidates forum, which is frequently held in a park or at Gepeto’s Pizza, and ask them piercing and probing questions such, “If you were on American Idol, which song would you sing?” “Would you wish to be a superhero?” or “What superhero would you like to be?”
The platform of the candidate is also available for anyone to hear. One candidate, for example, promised to “Stop the Crime,” although as far as I’m aware, the only crime that could occur in such a great location would be to steal an election by stealing some vote boxes. We know it occurs in Chicago, but no one has ever been caught stealing an election in Burney, as far as I’m aware.
Many candidates invent appealing slogans, such as “Don’t be a schmuck; vote for Luck.” They put up signs all throughout town and employ campaign managers. The candidates and their pledges were presented in the news piece I saved. Dusty, for example, promised to get Nike to relocate its worldwide headquarters to Burney and then completely sponsor the Burney Raiders sports program. “If elected, I would bring a fashion mall to downtown Burney,” Katie, a waitress, pledged. “I would vow to put a stop to all the gossip, drama, and stories that travel around the intermountain region on a regular basis,” Brooke, a bank teller, stated.

“I would lead a strategy team that would engage with current companies, government, and non-profit organizations to build a long-term plan to grow and diversify the cash stream coming into Burney,” Corey, a preacher, claimed.
Without meaning to offend you, pastor, you sound like the kind of politician we already have far too many of.
