Prodigy’s Creators Hint at Chakotay’s Role and Explain What It Means to Make All.
Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Star Trek series intended towards children, premiered this week on Paramount+, yet that title may not convey the entire story of what Prodigy is about. After all, Star Trek has been a family-friendly series for the last 55 years. Parents who grew up with The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager passed on their enthusiasm to their children who grew up with The Original Series. Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and now Prodigy are bringing a new generation of Star Trek fans onboard. But, as creators Kevin and Dan Hageman said following the show’s NYCC debut earlier this month, Prodigy is designed to be a welcome starting place for any Star Trek newbie, regardless of age.
“Isn’t the Star Trek world enormous?” Kevin expresses himself. “Whether it’s a toddler or an adult, it’s becoming deeper and deeper, and I believe it’s becoming more and more daunting.” What should I do first? What’s the best place for me to become involved with this?
Dan gets right in “You might advise the kids to start with The Original Series, but they could be like, ‘I don’t know, this seems like old-timey stuff,’ or something similar. You don’t want them to dismiss it before they’ve even started. To put it another way, this is like to pouring sugar on your medication. It’s like, let’s produce a program that will amaze them, arouse their interest, and create characters that they will care about, and then bring that new audience into the universe of Gene Roddenberry once they care about those people. And you’re beginning from the outside in the pilot, which is why it doesn’t seem quite like Star Trek, but I guarantee you, we’ll get there.”
To that aim, Star Trek: Prodigy’s debut episode is short on Star Trek knowledge and cliches. The Hagemans, on the other hand, have a plan that extends beyond the Delta Quadrant, where the program is now located. The kids are getting closer to Federation space, which means they’re getting closer to Star Trek, and it’s all because of the weird ship they’ve seized, the USS Protostar.
Kevin responds, “You know very little about the ship.” “Isn’t she a great mystery? This ship has a lot of surprises in store for you. Is it possible for us to bring them home this season? Is it possible to transport them to Federation space? As a result, they’ll be able to encounter more recognizable species or classic Trek themes as a result of this.”
Training Hologram modeled like Captain Kathryn Janeway, spoken by Kate Mulgrew, who portrayed the role in Star Trek: Voyager, is guiding them along the route. The Hagemans claim that Janeway’s character was crucial to their Star Trek: Prodigy idea, and that they didn’t have a back-up plan in case Mulgrew rejected to return.
“It was always the goal,” Dan says of reuniting with Mulgrew as Janeway. “‘Would you want to work on an entrance point show?’ it asked Secret Hideout. Our first reaction was, “Wow, that’s a lot of pressure.” I don’t believe we’ll be able to achieve it. Then we walk and leave, but but but, if you make it about a bunch of aliens that have no idea what they’re doing, it’ll be entertaining, and in the same breath, it’ll be Captain Janeway, who is the ideal person. Finally, we decide, “Oh crap, I guess we’re going to be working on a Star Trek program because this is something that thrills us and we think it will excite a new audience.””
“We were frightened before she signed,” Kevin says. “I’m hoping she signs because seeing Picard look after a lot of kids on the bridge doesn’t seem like a nice show to me.”
Mulgrew isn’t the only Voyager alum making a comeback in Prodigy. Chakotay, Janeway’s former first officer on the Voyager, will be voiced by Robert Beltran. The Hagemans remain tight-lipped regarding Chakotay’s and the other Starfleet officers set to appear in the series.
“All we can say is that Chakotay certainly plays a significant role in holographic Janeway’s memory banks,” Dan says. “So there’s a bond there that I believe all fans want to see more of and see how it develops. So I believe that’s something to think about.”
