Kevin Owens has been on a pretty hot streak lately, with his matches against Roman Reigns and AJ Styles being some of the most compelling of 2017. As of this week, the former NXT Champion has been named the number one contender for the Universal Championship, with a title match at WrestleMania 35 likely. But, as the readers of the Wikiaula know, it hasn’t been all good for Owens. Despite his recent success, Kevin has been struggling with injuries, and that has led to some uncertainty about his future with the WWE.
Several weeks ago, Kevin Owens took to social media to announce that he had terminated his contract with WWE. Now, WWE.com has more details on the reasons behind his departure.
Kevin Owens confirmed on Twitter that he will not be appearing at this year’s WrestleMania, thus ending all speculation about him competing in the Royal Rumble. This, in turn, has led to speculation about his future with WWE.
Recently, WWE had a few high-profile contracts expire, and talents like Adam Cole and Daniel Bryan decided not to extend them and instead signed with AEW. That doesn’t include individuals that were released by WWE in the last year or so and went to AEW or Impact Wrestling when their non-competes expired. Another superstar’s contract has been discovered to be ending far sooner than anticipated, and that deal belongs to none other than Kevin Owens, according to Fightful Select. Owens was believed to have a deal with WWE until 2023, however it now seems that he just has a contract until 2022.
According to Fightful Select’s sources, his initial 5-year contract, which would have carried him through 2023, was modified to expire in January of 2022 during a restructuring of many WWE contracts before to the epidemic. This is also relevant to Owens’ most recent tweet.
Earlier in the day, Owens went to Twitter and posted (then soon removed) a message containing Mount Rushmore’s coordinates. Because he was in a stable with Adam Cole and The Young Bucks known as the Mount Rushmore of Wrestling when the four were in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla together, wrestling fans immediately viewed this as a potential hint of his joining All Elite Wrestling. Cole made his AEW debut at the All Out pay-per-view this past weekend.

The Canadian superstar debuted in WWE in 2014 and was quickly propelled to the top of the NXT brand after assaulting NXT Champion Sami Zayn on the same night he made his debut. In February 2015, he won the NXT Championship, and only a few months later, he was feuding with John Cena on Monday Night Raw while still holding the title. Despite competing in many championship bouts and winning the Universal, Intercontinental (twice), and United States Championships, he hasn’t held any gold since July 2017. Late last month marked the fifth anniversary of Owens’ Universal Championship victory, leading KO to thank his supporters in a video.
“Man, the past five years have been nothing short of a roller coaster….” The highs are wonderful, but the lows may be difficult to bear for someone who cares really and is extremely passionate about something, as I am. But I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve had a fantastic career,” Owens remarked. “I’ve had my wife, my kids, and my parents — all of them have been wonderful in assisting me with this. It’s not only them; I’ve had some fantastic friends and coworkers with whom to share this journey. And I’ve got everyone’s attention right now.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a devoted following to accompany me on this journey. And now, it’s you people who remind me of what occurred five years ago when I won the Universal Title. So I thought this would be a good moment to express my gratitude to all of you “He went on to say more. “Through being there for the highs, the lows, and simply for being there for the whole journey.”
Kevin Owens is WWE’s Universal Champion, and will defend that title against Samoa Joe on Sunday Night’s Raw. A new report from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer claims that there is a “strong possibility” that this is Kevin Owens’ last match with the company..
