We’ve found the one thing that’s not on everyone’s list: new World. This neighborhood in Grand Theft Auto Online is a totally different world than anything we’re used to and there are some people who just can’t get past it. Here, we investigate what makes new World so grumpy-inducing and how you might be able to avoid dealing with tons of annoyance when playing GTAV online.
The “New World” is a new video game that has been released. It has received mixed reviews due to the fact that it takes away some of the things that people are used to in other games, such as having a single character and leveling up. Read more in detail here: new world video game.
Consider me Donald Glover with a pizza box, thanks to a timely note from a reader this morning reminding me to check out the New World subreddit to see what’s hot now that we’re precisely one month into the game.
Our reader had alerted us to several simmering threads regarding the game’s lack of customisation, particularly the fact that female avatars are limited to bodies and attire that are mostly masculine. “It seems like they made the game, tried to debut it in alpha, then realized ‘oops, we forgot to design female characters,’ so they grabbed the male models and gave them three long haircuts and called it a day,” one commenter bemoaned, pointing out that this was also a complaint in alpha. We’ve previously discussed our dissatisfaction with the game’s limited personalization options, but the problem with female characters is especially vexing.
We’ve previously discussed the game’s deflated economy, but it seems that on certain servers, the situation is so terrible that the community has resorted to gambling to earn a buck. “My server has turned into a casino, and it’s honestly entertaining to watch,” one frequently upvoted post from a Windsward player exclaims, claiming that wagers of 40,000 silver are not uncommon.
“[Y] You’ll find up to 100 individuals betting against one other, and the stakes are becoming crazy. The game is straightforward. You approach a player in the appropriate casino area and tell them how much you’re willing to bet. If the other player accepts the wager, both of you perform the Dice emote, and the loser swaps the winnings to the winner. Obviously, nothing prevents a person from cheating and just refusing to hand up their gains, but players soon discovered that they can only do this once before the whole server shuns them. On an Excel spreadsheet, I keep track of cheats.”
The casino’s designated area. Oh, my goodness. Remember that most large MMOs officially prohibit this form of gambling for obvious reasons, so it’ll be fascinating to watch what Amazon does.
Many of the other Reddit complaints that have jumped out at us this week are similar to issues that have plagued the game since launch: exploits, bugs, and broken perks, griefers emptying guild coffers and jumping servers with a transfer, watermark farming, merge requests, studio communication, and travel currency gripes (which I sympathize with because I despise the Azoth system). And the forums are very similar, with more “dead game” insistence and an almost unending stream of commentators wanting either a PvP server or more users to flag for PvP, implying a separation between playerbases.
Veteran MMO players may notice that this list seems to be incomplete, but this is pretty much the reality of most large MMORPG launches, and those of you who remember the ones when you couldn’t log in for months will consider everything to be trivial. That would include some of the 400,000 concurrent players who have checked in in the past day, just under half of the game’s all-time high, which isn’t bad. On Steam, the game has a “generally good” review score as well.
Happy gamers, as the phrase goes, play rather than post.
New World has been patching on Wednesdays, but you won’t find any patch notes here, and the game hasn’t been taken down for maintenance. Amazon did respond to player complaints on the official forums, implying that the fix has been postponed to some extent.
“We appreciate your interest in learning more about our plans for the forthcoming patch. The team is working hard to resolve important problems that have arisen in the last week, as well as make some additional modifications to help you get the most out of your game. Once those changes are in place, we’ll write and distribute our patch notes, which will include our estimated downtimes. Always keep an eye on the forum’s Official News area for the most up-to-date information. Thank you very much for being so patient and understanding!”
