Sky News Australia has proudly served the nation for more than 25 years, providing live news and national affairs programming that covers all sides of every story.
1996 – 2000
Sky News Australia began broadcasting its 24-hour national news service on 19 February 1996 on Foxtel, becoming Australia’s first 24/7 news channel, operated by Australian News Channel Pty Ltd, a joint venture between British Sky Broadcasting (Sky Plc), Seven West Media and Nine Entertainment Co.
Sky News Australia introduced audiences to live 24/7 rolling news coverage, commentary and analysis leading a radical transformation in news broadcasting in Australia.
In 2000, Sky News Australia opened its first interstate bureau at Parliament House, Canberra reaffirming its position as the leader in live breaking political news.
2001 – 2015
In February 2001, Sky News Australia launched its first dedicated website at SkyNews.com.au.
That year, Sky News also launched as a dedicated 24/7 channel on Sky Television in New Zealand.
The company continued to expand its Australian services with the ground-breaking launch of the IPTV service ‘Multiview’ in 2004, and cemented itself as the country’s leading multi-channel, multi-platform news provider.
Further channels were added with the launch of a 24/7 Business channel in 2008, followed a year later with the launch of Australia’s Public Affairs Channel (A-PAC), the only channel devoted to live coverage of Parliament nationwide providing viewers with unfiltered access to Australian democracy in action and a platform for discussion and debate.
Sky News Weather channel was launched in 2012 (previously The Weather Channel).
In 2015 the international OTT news service Australia Channel was launched, bringing Australian news to a global audience.
2016 – 2022
In December 2016, News Corp Australia took ownership of Australian News Channel Pty Ltd and its Sky News and Australia Channel services, bringing together two of Australia’s strongest and most credentialed news media sources.
In May 2017 Sky News began producing the 24/7 FOX SPORTS News channel.
Later that year Sky News unveiled its new broadcast and business centre based at News Corp HQ, Sydney.
In May 2018 Sky News announced Sky News Extra (formerly A-PAC) as the new home of live coverage of Federal Parliament, and launched a standalone Sky News UK channel on Foxtel.
In 2018 Sky News opened a new Canberra studio and media centre becoming the largest studio facility within Parliament House.
Sky News Australia expanded its digital operations in July 2019, announcing content partnership arrangements with Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Taboola.
In March 2020, Sky News Australia further expanded its digital content reach with the launch of ‘Sky News on iHeartRadio’, Australia’s largest audio app. Sky News Radio quickly became the #1 News/Talk station on the platform.
That same month Sky News Australia also launched a dedicated COVID-19 channel on Foxtel, keeping Australians informed during the pandemic.
In December 2020 Sky News Australia expanded its foreign news coverage establishing a Washington Bureau and appointing its first Washington Correspondent, Annelise Nielsen.
In July 2021 Sky News Australia re-launched SkyNews.com.au expanding the site’s capabilities in text-based digital breaking news and exclusive journalism. Bringing together the site’s success in online video and the digital community built across social media, Sky News Australia has become the most engaging news brand in the country.
In 2022, Sky News Australia became the first Australian TV news channel to reach the 3 million subscriber milestone on YouTube.
SkyNews.com.au is now one of Australia’s most visited news websites with an average monthly audience of more than 5 million unique visitors. Across regional free-to-air channel Sky News Regional, audiences have grown by +17% year-on-year.
